International Day of Women and Girls in Science I 11 February 2026

Celebrating Women in Science

Each year, the global community comes together to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day proclaimed by UNESCO in 2015 to recognise the vital contributions of women in science and to advance gender equality in STEM fields.

Progress and Persistent Gaps

Despite ongoing efforts to improve representation, women continue to account for only about one-third of the world’s researchers, according to UNESCO’s 2025 Status and Trends of Women in Science fact sheet. This underscores the need for sustained investment in inclusive policies, mentorship, and access to opportunities across all levels of scientific careers.

Encouragingly, sub-Saharan Africa is showing steady progress. The proportion of women researchers in the region has increased from 29.2% in 2012 to 33.6% in 2022. While there is still work to be done, this upward trend reflects growing momentum toward a more equitable scientific landscape.

Advancing Representation in Drug Discovery

In recognition of the importance of gender equity, the H3D Foundation Symposium 2026 (13–16 October) is proud to feature strong female representation. Women make up 50% of the invited speakers; 12 out of 25 highlighting a deliberate commitment to inclusivity and excellence.

These leading scientists are at the forefront of drug discovery and development, contributing critical expertise, innovation and leadership to address some of the world’s most pressing health challenges.

Together, they represent a diverse and accomplished cohort shaping the future of global health research.

Looking Ahead

Celebrating women in science is not only about recognising achievements, it is also about reinforcing the importance of equal opportunities, visibility and leadership for women in STEM. Platforms such as the H3D Foundation Symposium play a vital role in showcasing excellence, fostering collaboration and inspiring the next generation of scientists.

As progress continues, sustained commitment from institutions, funders and the global scientific community will be essential to ensure that women are fully represented and empowered to lead in science.
