Celebrating the 2025 H3D Open Day

On the 1st November 2025, H3D once again opened its doors to the next generation of scientists for its annual Open Day. The vibrant event took place at the University of Cape Town’s Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM), bringing together curious minds and passionate researchers for a day of exploration and inspiration.

The purpose of hosting the Open Day was to raise awareness of H3D’s pioneering work in drug discovery and to inspire students to pursue careers in this dynamic and impactful field. This event welcomed undergraduate and postgraduate students from various institutions and scientific disciplines, affording the unique opportunity to interact with H3D scientists, participate in tours of the laboratories, and engage in thought-provoking panel discussions.

The panel discussion featured insightful talks from Dr. Dale Taylor (Malaria Parasitology), Dr. Jason Hlozek (CADD, AI and ML), Dr. Oluwatosin Audu (Medicinal Chemistry), Dr. Donald Seanego (Medicinal Chemistry), and Dr. Nicolaas Salomane (Enzymology).
Through engaging conversations with H3D scientists and participants gained valuable insights into the diverse areas of drug discovery, inspired by the real-world impact of this work. The participants received an overview of H3D’s multifaceted drug discovery research, including Medicinal Chemistry, CADD, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) / TB Biology, Enzymology, Parasitology, and Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) / Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion (ADME). During the lab tours, participants experienced H3D’s research environment and deepened their understanding of Africa’s growing drug discovery capabilities.

When asked about their favourite moments, participants shared the following:

“Hearing the journeys and views from the panelists”,

“It was quite refreshing to see African Scientists interested in developing molecules for an African issue. Most often drug discovery spaces are with African scientists resolving problems for other regions.”
“The scientists were engaging and happy to share their experiences.”

H3D is proud of the success of the 2025 Open Day, a day filled with learning, inspiration, and connection. We extend our gratitude to all participants, H3D staff, and Prof Kelly Chibale’s postgraduate students who made this event another milestone in nurturing Africa’s future scientists.
