H3D staff supports science capacity building in SA youth
A team from H3D recently participated in The Career Indaba on 28 May organized by Future Pathways Consultants, to provide highschool learners (Grade 8 to 12) with the opportunity to interact with a number of representatives from various industries to expose students to various career opportunities. The event was attended by over 75 learners, with more than 25 representatives in attendance.
Our researchers set up a science booth at the Indaba and team interacted with students and parents to answer specific career-related questions. The team provided information on H3D and the University of Cape Town, including the various disciplines and subjects required to consider a career in drug discovery. The team also had the opportunity to demonstrate simple experiments to the learners, sparking an interest in science and hopefully drug discovery careers in Africa.
“It was exciting to see the interest the young learners have in the sciences very early in their learning careers. This is very encouraging as there is a great need for scientists in the various related fields. Hopefully, some of these young minds can eventually become scientist and consider drug discovery as a career option.” Frank Zindo, Medicinal Chemistry Post Doc, H3D
Building capacity in drug discovery and related sciences and community outreach and education is a core part of H3D's mission.
